Even though “But I’m a Cheerleader” was given an NC-17 rating (an unjust rating that stems from a system wanting to censor LGBTQ+ representation), the movie is a comedic coming-of-age movie about acceptance and love. Playing as Megan and Graham, the two actresses beautifully capture the innocence and butterflies of first love. Looking back at their roles in “But I’m a Cheerleader”, we can see Duvall and Lyonne blooming into the successful and creative paths we see them in today. The chemistry between Clea Duvall and Natasha Lyonne is scintillating as sparks fly between their two characters.

Free from the teachings of True Directions, Megan sets out to do the same for Graham and makes one last effort to get the girl of her dreams. There, Megan sees a positive representation of a healthy queer couple through Larry and Lloyd and embraces her sexuality. As Megan falls in love with her True Direction campmate, Graham, she rejects the toxic messages the conversion therapy camp is trying to teach her and runs away to a safe house run by Larry and Lloyd, ex-members of the camp. And we see this through the two leads, Megan and Graham (Clea Duvall). These scenes are wonderfully fun to watch, but they also convey the deeply conservative conception we have of gender and sexuality in America that is still evident today.īut, truly, the heart of the movie is about love and acceptance-about embracing your sexuality and setting yourself free from the suffocating heteronormative ideologies.

Babbit intentionally exaggerates the stereotypical gender binary by having the boys wear blue and the girls wear pink and grooming them into stereotypical gender roles. Lead by disciplinarian Mary Brown (Cathy Moriarty), Megan and her fellow campmates endure a five-step program to become heterosexuals.
